Cada año la World Press Photo en Amsterdam organiza una selección de fotografía de prensa y otorga un prestigioso premio a quien llegue a ganar el primer lugar en dicho concurso, que este año fue otorgado al fotógrafo Ronaldo Schemidt.

La fotografía muestra a un jóven de 28 años llamado Víctor Salazar, estudiante en Chacao al este de Caracas, quien había hecho estallar un tanque de gasolina de una motocicleta militar en una de las violentas protestas venezolanas que se llevaron a cabo entre abril y julio del año pasado.

El fotógrafo de la AFP mencionó que vio como el joven salió corriendo, hirviendo en llamaradas de fuego y moviendo sus manos con energía para apagar el fuego que cubría todo su cuerpo e intentaba gritar pero su máscara antigás apenas lo dejaba. Tuvo que echarse al asfalto y revolcarse en el suelo seco para que el fuego se extinguiera lo más rápido posible y terminara la tortura.

May 3, 2017 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ President Maduro had announced plans to revise Venezuela’s democratic system by forming a constituent assembly to replace the opposition-led National Assembly, in effect consolidating legislative powers for himself. Opposition leaders called for mass protests to demand early presidential elections. Clashes between protesters and the Venezuelan national guard broke out on 3 May, with protesters (many of whom wore hoods, masks or gas masks) lighting fires and hurling stones. Salazar was set alight when the gas tank of a motorbike exploded. The independent jury selected 312 photographs by 42 photographers from 22 countries, over an intensive anonymous judging process. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #WPPh2018 award-winning visual journalists will speak about their work at the World Press Photo Festival in Amsterdam from 13–14 April. The Festival will have a varied program of presentations, workshops, and meetups featuring special guests, including the renowned Sem Presser Lecture, supported by DuPho, this year presented by Stephanie Sinclair.

Víctor Salazar terminó con 70% de quemaduras en el cuerpo y tuvieron que realizarle 42 cirugías de injertos de piel según lo que platicó su hermana a la AFP ya que él no quiere tener contacto con los medios; es un momento triste no sólo para él sino para toda Venezuela que no logra pasar de este momento tan difícil y trágico.

Fueron cinco finalistas que estuvieron pendientes del premio que finalmente se llevó Schemidt por una foto tan impactante. En el concurso hubo más de 4500 fotógrafos de distintos países en el mundo pero fue Ronaldo Schemidt quien fue galardonado con el premio a "creatividad y talento visual (...) una imagen o acontecimiento de gran importancia periodística ocurrido el año pasado" aunque para él signifique mucho más que eso.
